Debra Hurwitz has more than 30 years of health care experience in both the public and private sectors. In her current role, she manages complex projects for large state agencies and health care clients often in partnership with other UMass Medical School departments.
Hurwitz is experienced in senior level management, strategic planning, organizational transformation, and process and quality improvement. She is currently assisting Rhode Island with their Care Transformation Collaborative by providing program administration, contract development, and strategic planning for the initiative. Hurwitz works closely with key stakeholders to improve the Patient Centered Medical Home model with existing practices and develops plans to expand and spread the model.
Previously at UMass Medical School, Hurwitz served as the Director of State Health Policy Analysis, providing strategic planning, program evaluation and policy analysis for Medicaid and the Department of Mental Health in Massachusetts. She was also the Senior Director of several large CMS grants including the Medicaid Infrastructure Grant and the Real Choices System Change grant, assisting in proposal development and start-up of the grant.
Hurwitz earned an MBA in Health Care Management Systems from the University of Rhode Island and BSN from UMass Dartmouth.
