Mary C. Fontaine joined UMass Medical School in 2000, and oversees operations and consulting services for our health care financing program. She has played a critical role in building the Medical School's national reputation in this area, particularly regarding the impact of federal programs, such as Medicare and Social Security, on state Medicaid programs.
Previously, as director of Benefit Coordination and Program Integrity, she led consulting services in the area of Medicaid program integrity and third-party liability, managed cost savings and recoveries of more than $3 billion annually, and developed savings initiatives for various state agencies across the country.
Before joining UMass Medical School, Ms. Fontaine served as director of Benefit Coordination and Recoveries for the Massachusetts Division of Medical Assistance. In that role, she contributed to policy and program development activities that informed the Massachusetts health care reform act of 2006. She also was responsible for managing the premium assistance programs and insurance partnership programs that leveraged employer-sponsored health insurance.
With more than 30 years of management experience, Ms. Fontaine has a strong background in benefit coordination and recovery as well as public-sector leadership, including extensive experience in national health care financing. She has served as chairperson for the Third Party Liability Technical Advisory Group and was appointed as a committee member on the Medical Support Working Group established by the U.S. Congress.
Ms. Fontaine earned a bachelor’s degree in health education from Northeastern University.
