Dr. Melissa Clark brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to UMass Medical School. Her research interests are in the use of mixed method research design approaches to answer questions that can ultimately help to improve the lives of underserved and vulnerable populations. She has extensive experience as principal investigator on a number of studies, funded from both public and private organizations.

A key theme in Dr. Clark’s research is a goal to better understand the individual, social, and environmental barriers and facilitators to health and well-being among individuals who have traditionally experienced disparities in health status and access to high-quality health care.

Prior to coming to UMass Medical School, she was a professor in the departments of Epidemiology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brown University’s School of Public Health and Alpert Medical School in Providence, R.I. Dr. Clark has a national reputation as a survey researcher. She led survey research and held a leadership role as the associate director of the Center for Population Health and Clinical Epidemiology at Brown. While at Brown, she was awarded the Comfort and Urry Prize for leadership, career advising, and motivation from the undergraduate college, the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Mentoring in Public Health from the School of Public Health, and the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award from the Alpert Medical School. 

Dr. Clark received her doctorate in public health from the Division of Community Health Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in quantitative methods and gerontology.
