Every year, between Sept. 15-Oct. 15, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. This includes both citizens and residents of the U.S. whose ancestry is traced to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The New England Newborn Screening Program, an initiative of UMass Chan Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine division, recently received HCU Network America’s first newborn screening research grant. The award will be used to explore the development of reference ranges for additional newborn screening markers for early detection of classical homocystinuria (HCU) and remethylation disorders.

Commonwealth Medicine hosted the Annual Paving the Way to Health Care Access Conference this June, and its virtual format didn’t deter attendees from 15 states and 60 organizations, representing 27 languages. The conference’s speakers, award presentation, and workshops attracted some 200 medical interpreters and managers as well as spoken language and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters on both days of the event—a testament to the resilience of those gathered for one of the nation’s premier language access conferences.
