Commonwealth Medicine Experts Attend Managed Care Pharmacy Conference in Chicago, Present Key Findings from Pharmacy Research on Massachusetts’ Medicaid (MassHealth) Population

During the last week of March, a group of Commonwealth Medicine pharmacy experts participated in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP)'s 2022 Conference in Chicago. These experts shared their research and clinical expertise on a wide range of topics, and our very own managed care pharmacy residency program director and clinical consultant pharmacist team leader Thomas C. Pomfret, PharmD, MPH, BCPS received the 2022 AMCP Residency Director Award.

The annual AMCP conference attracts more than 4,000 professionals working in managed care pharmacy with education sessions, keynote presentations, and networking opportunities. Our Commonwealth Medicine experts shared their knowledge and expertise on the following topics:

  • Eliza Anderson, PharmD, pharmacy resident, presented research on the health care utilization and costs among patients with asthma initiating dupilumab in the MassHealth population.
  • Wilson Haong, PharmD, MBA, pharmacy resident, presented research that aimed to identify the economic burden of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) by comparing mean annual IBD-related medical costs and events among MassHealth members before and after ustekinumab initiation. 
  • Daniel Huang, PharmD, pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacoeconomics fellow, presented research on the diagnosed prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) within the MassHealth population.
  • Neha Kashalikar, PharmD, clinical pharmacist, Mahsa Salsabili, PharmD, PhD, pharmacoeconomics specialist, and Paul L. Jeffrey, PharmD, consultant, retired Commonwealth Medicine employee and AMCP President from 2021-2022, shared their expertise on establishing a value-based contracting (VBC) program and provided a framework that other programs and lines of business may consider adopting.   • Michael Angelini, PharmD, MA, psychopharmacology consultant and professor of pharmacy practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University, provided an overview of how digital therapeutics are being applied for behavioral health conditions. Co-presenter and former Commonwealth Medicine, UMass Chan Medical School clinical pharmacist, Soumya Vishwanath, PharmD, discussed current payer strategies.
